We held our annual lab retreat at Pinewood Social in downtown Nashville. A few highlights before we were displaced by not one, but two, bachelorette parties... :/

Chris has been awarded a Vanderbilt Undergraduate Summer Research Program fellowship for summer 2018. This is a highly competitive program and rare for a rising junior to get a slot. Congratulations Chris!
Meredith Frazier successfully defended her thesis on March 12th, We're so proud of you! Party pictures to follow soon...
Emily Linton and Kaylee Johnson have joined the lab for IGP rotation 4. Delighted to have you ladies with us!
Alex Davies's beautiful work on the proteomics of AP4 coated vesicles is out on Bioarxiv today. We're delighted to continue our collaboration with Alex, Scottie, and Georg!
Check it out here The Jackson Lab is actively recruiting excellent and motivated graduate students for high impact projects that span structural biology, cell biology, and biochemistry of membrane trafficking proteins. Send Lauren an email if you're interested in any of the following options for next year.
* CryoEM. We have a trafficking coat protein complex in ice, and we're already at 13A! Great opportunity to learn to prepare samples, collect and analyze data, and build models. * Crystallization/crystallography projects. We have confirmed several new binding partners for our trafficking proteins, so we are ready to undertake crystal trials. * Biophysics & biochemistry. Multiple opportunities to learn how to use calorimetry (ITC) to quantify binding affinities and structure-based mutagenesis to test binding interfaces. * Microscopy projects in the Nikon Center. Great chance to work with graduate student to use our excellent imaging facilities. Congratulations to Meredith for being selected as the recipient of the 2018 Anne Karpay Award in Structural Biology. This award goes to a student who has conducted outstanding research and has displayed collegiality and willingness to engage others. Meredith will present her award seminar on Tuesday, January 16th. We are so proud of Meredith!!
The Karpay Award was established in 2010 to honor the memory of Dr. Anne Karpay who died after a four-year battle with breast cancer. It recognizes one senior graduate student who is a well-rounded colleague and scientist, who is collaborative and collegial, and who has performed exceptional research in the field of structural biology. Dr. Karpay exemplified each characteristic and demonstrated a passion for science, for friendship and for life. Peng Xu's paper on Snc1 recycling by COPI is out today in eLife. We're happy to have collaborated on this interesting story about how COPI sorts a ubiquitinated SNARE protein. Congrats Peng!
